Broadcom Introduces First NFC Chip in 40 NM to Drive Next Generation of Mobile Payments and Simplified Connectivity for Range of Consumer Electronics

The accelerated adoption of NFC will transform the use of smartphones, advancing beyond contactless mobile payments and ticketing to enable radically simplified connectivity between the handset and other devices like Bluetooth headsets and Wi-Fi-enabled digital televisions.

  • New BCM2079x solutions are the industry's first NFC chips manufactured in 40 nm CMOS process for smaller size and the industry's lowest power consumption
  • Transaction-based Application ID routing provides unmatched support for all business models, with the ability to simultaneously use multiple secure elements or SIM cards for authentication and mobile payments
  • Advanced Maestro™ middleware allows new NFC applications to also utilize Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities in the device

Broadcom StrataXGS Switch Solutions Drive New Era in Mobile Aggregation Networks

The StrataXGS BCM56640 series, for modular platforms, and the StrataXGS BCM56540 series, for fixed carrier Ethernet platforms, deliver the industry's highest port speeds and scale in their class. The flexible StrataXGS architecture underlying both families is ideally suited for both transport-oriented (PTN) and IP-oriented (IP-RAN) aggregation network deployments, providing operators with greater capacity and service density while controlling operational costs.

  • New 10/40/100 GbE switching solutions dramatically increase provider aggregation network bandwidth and scale while reducing system power consumption by up to 40 percent
  • Ideally suited to enable PTN and IP-RAN network deployments with latest innovations in MPLS, OAM, time synchronization and protection switching
  • Flexible forwarding and port logic optimized for new paradigm of centralized switch architectures

Key Themes & Demonstrations

Simplifying Connectivity for Mobile Payments and Consumer Electronics Connectivity

Today, you use a credit card to buy a coffee and you use email to send a video from your smartphone to your PC. This is all about to change. Near field communications (NFC) will open up a whole new world of applications, allowing you to transmit data between devices when they are in close proximity. And while mobile payments has been widely touted as the killer application for NFC, the proliferation of NFC will expand the usefulness of consumer electronics and inspire a range of new applications enabling simple, secure connections, such as transferring a video directly to your Smart TV with a simple tap. Broadcom is uniquely positioned to lead the NFC market with its vast IP portfolio, connected ecosystem and expertise in developing standards-based, integrated solutions. The company is designing new NFC innovations that meet the power, size and functional requirements to ignite NFC adoption in next generation handsets.

Driving a New Era in Mobile Aggregation Networks

Global IP traffic is expected to quadruple over the next several years, driving the need for a faster and more efficient aggregation network. Broadcom is meeting that challenge with two new feature-rich series of Carrier Ethernet aggregation switch solutions. The StrataXGS BCM56640 series, for modular platforms, and the StrataXGS BCM56540 series, for fixed carrier Ethernet platforms, deliver the industry's highest port speeds and scale in their class. The flexible StrataXGS architecture underlying both families is ideally suited for both transport-oriented (PTN) and Internet Protocol-oriented (IP-RAN) aggregation network deployments, providing operators with greater capacity and service density while controlling operational costs.

The Path to High Bandwidth Mobile Backhaul

Capable of delivering 1000x more bandwidth than legacy time-division multiplexing (TDM) based networks, the Broadcom® BCM56440 series offers carriers a seamless migration path to Ethernet-class performance and advanced services in the mobile backhaul network. The BCM56440 switch series provides the industry's highest integration in its class, combining the functionality of up to seven off-the-shelf application-specific standard parts (ASSPs) into one 40 nanometer (nm) CMOS device, dramatically lowering OEM bill-of-material (BOM) cost while reducing service provider capital expenditure (CAPEX) on mobile backhaul equipment by up to 50 percent.

Unified Wired and Wireless Solutions for Enterprise & SMB

Broadcom is on the cutting edge of innovation, enabling next-generation equipment for Enterprise network and SMB applications. Broadcom's industry-leading StrataXGS® switch architecture delivers a wide range of products that are easy to manage, energy efficient and employ robust security measures. Along with Broadcom® Intelligent Power Management (IPM) technology, Broadcom Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) devices adapt to the physical conditions of the network, lowering power consumption by 70 percent or more when the network is active and up to 95 percent during down time.
