Broadcom Introduces Industry's First 65nm Gigabit Ethernet Controller with Energy-Efficient, Web-Based Client Manageability and Advanced Security

New Single-Chip NetXtreme® Controller Integrates DASH and PMCI Client Manageability Protocols via New TruManage™ Technology

IRVINE, Calif., Nov 06, 2007 -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced the industry's first 65 nanometer (nm) single-chip Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) controller that integrates client manageability via Web services-based management, as well as advanced security for Microsoft® Windows Vista® requirements. In support of open client manageability protocols, the new controller features a centralized architecture that provides an advanced level of secure, remote offline manageability. This enables IT professionals to efficiently and securely manage their desktop and mobile systems from anywhere in the world, at any time, regardless of the state of the system (OS-present, OS-absent or out-of- service).

The new Broadcom® NetXtreme® controller utilizes TruManage™ technology that integrates DASH and PMCI open client manageability standards and incorporates advanced power management features that enable enterprise- class PCs to be fully managed while maintaining compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star program.

Managing PC systems around the world, in multi-vendor, distributed enterprise environments, creates a critical challenge for today's IT administrators as they are required to manage a disparate set of tools and applications. The tools are mainly proprietary or specialized, and must be adapted specifically to each individual corporate enterprise resulting in an increased total cost of ownership (TCO) and a lack of efficiency and consistency when managing these PC systems.

To address these challenges, the DMTF® (Distributed Management Task Force) open standards group has created a Common Information Model (CIM) and Web services- based management initiative called DASH (Desktop and Mobile Architecture for System Hardware) for "over-the-wire" manageability, and a complementary workgroup named the PMCI (Platform Management Component Intercommunication) for defining "inside-the-box" communications protocols and interfaces.

Announced today is the Broadcom BCM5761 with TruManage technology, the first enterprise-class GbE controller that supports both DASH and PMCI protocols and interfaces on a single chip. The TruManage technology was developed from innovative hardware and firmware solutions, and since the technology is based on open standards, it is processor and chipset vendor- agnostic, which in turn, could enable the proliferation of advanced client manageability throughout the enterprise.

The BCM5761's scalable controller architecture (along with its highly optimized firmware and software) enables extremely low power and cost- effective management functionality for in-band, out-of-band and out-of-service environments. Its on-chip processor and memory subsystem allow the implementation to be highly secure and less vulnerable to system component failures than competing client management solutions.

The BCM5761 controller also offers advanced IPsec task offload capabilities compliant with Microsoft® Windows Vista® version 2 logo requirements. These capabilities enable IT professionals to deploy IPsec technology on their existing network with no performance penalty while maintaining low CPU utilization and full network capacity by offloading cryptographic processing to the hardware.

Technical Information

The single-chip BCM5761 is an eleventh-generation 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet LAN controller for high performance network applications. It is fabricated in a low voltage, 65nm CMOS process that provides ultra-low power dissipation.

To enable lower power consumption, smaller size and higher levels of integration, Broadcom has migrated to the 65nm design process - the most advanced lithographic node for manufacturing semiconductors in large volumes today. The move to the 65nm design process (versus 90nm and 130nm processes) is changing the competitive landscape for Broadcom given the breadth and depth of the communications intellectual property it possesses. Without a broad portfolio of market leading solutions to integrate with the advanced design process, competitors are not able to take full advantage of the benefits that the 65nm process provides.

The BCM5761 GbE controller has the following capabilities:

  • Enables remote configuration and installation, as well as remote diagnostics and repair of PC platforms regardless of their state.
  • Enables a scalable solution that is platform vendor agnostic.
