Low Power and High Performance Media PC Solutions Enable the Seamless Playback of High Quality Video and Audio Content for the Emerging UMPC, MID and Embedded x86 Appliance Market
TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 3, 2008 -- Computex 2008 -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its media PC technology enables seamless video and audio playback of high quality video for the emerging ultra-mobile personal computer (UMPC), mobile Internet device (MID) and x86 embedded appliance markets. As multimedia content on the Internet becomes higher quality and more compressed, the Broadcom® BCM70012 and BCM70010 media PC solutions provide high performance multimedia decoding, at low power, enabling PC OEMs to integrate seamless playback of high quality (and more compressed) video in a small, low cost form factor.
With a small form factor and low cost, UMPCs and MIDs are attractive to highly mobile consumers who enjoy digital media and desire the freedom and flexibility to communicate with others, and access information anytime, anywhere. These devices typically feature Internet connectivity, e-mail and office applications and tools, but lack the high quality multimedia capabilities that are now common on mobile PCs.
Broadcom's advanced media PC solutions satisfy the low cost, low power and high performance requirements of this market. Broadcom's BCM70012 (for PCI Express® applications) and BCM70010 (for PCI applications) act as multimedia hubs, providing advanced Internet multimedia capabilities and file playback in small UMPC or MID form factors, while delivering extended battery life, low power and a rich multimedia experience to this new class of low cost media PC devices.

UMPCs and MIDs address the need for portability and are ideally positioned to allow users to view the growing amount of multimedia content available via the Internet. This amount of downloadable content is on the rise and encompasses both user-generated content (UGC) and user-generated video (UGV), as well as premium online content that includes network TV shows. According to In-Stat market research, the worldwide UMPC market is expected to grow to 7.3 million units by 2012 and the worldwide MID market growth is expected to grow to 11.4 million units by 2012.
