Pedestal, Blade and Rack-Mounted Servers Benefit from Higher Performance
ServerWorks Corporation, a Broadcom (Nasdaq: BRCM) company and the leading independent supplier of high-performance SystemI/O™ integrated circuits for servers, workstations and storage platforms, today announced it has begun sampling the Grand Champion™ SL (GC-SL) core logic that extends the features of its Grand Champion SystemI/O family to entry-level pedestal, blade and rack- mounted servers. ServerWorks' SystemI/O core logic technology manages the flow of data to and from a system's processors, memory and peripheral input/output (I/O) devices.High-End Features and Performance for Entry-Level Servers
The GC-SL allows OEMs to upgrade entry-level servers to Intel® Pentium® 4 processors and Grand Champion industry-leading RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) features. The GC-SL's North Bridge supports up to four DIMMs for up to four gigabytes of DDR memory. The memory controller supports ECC™ error correction and memory scrubbing for highly reliable operation.
The GC-SL's South Bridge supports a single 64-bit PCI bus operating at 33 MHz that transfers data at rates up to 266 Megabytes/second, giving the GC-SL more than enough capacity to handle the traffic generated by a Gigabit Ethernet port operating at full speed. The South Bridge also supports two ATA100 IDE channels that can be used for RAID 0, 1 or 5 operation and a third ATA100 channel that can be used with CD-ROM or backup devices. ServerWorks' CIOB-X2 I/O Bridge can also add support for two PCI-X buses with up to 2 Gigabytes/second of incremental I/O capacity.
"The GC-SL completes ServerWorks' Grand Champion SystemI/O family supporting all levels of Pentium 4-based servers from entry-level to the highest performing enterprise class systems," said Raju Vegesna, President and CEO of ServerWorks. "The combination of Intel's Pentium 4 with its Hyper- Threading technology, and the Grand Champion SystemI/O architecture with its unprecedented performance and RAS features, raises the bar for server performance and reliability by an order of magnitude. Finally, OEMs can design servers with the confidence that new systems will meet or exceed end- user demands, and with the flexibility to differentiate their entry-level server systems."
Leading Server OEMs Support Grand Champion SLDell Computer Corp.
"The efficiency of the direct model enables Dell to bring the latest, most relevant technologies to our customers at a rapid pace," said Bruce Kornfeld, director of small business marketing for Dell's PowerEdge server and PowerVault storage products. "The new ServerWorks' GC-SL SystemI/O technology will provide high performance features for increased reliability and availability to our corporate workgroup and small business customers."
Fujitsu Siemens Computers
"The GC-SL SystemI/O technology will allow us to round out our server product line with a single, high-performance core logic platform from high-end to entry-level," said Klaus Kratzer, Executive Director, PRIMERGY Server Product Group, Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "The GC-SL allows us to differentiate our products even at the entry-level while leveraging our experience in designing the Grand Champion-based products we have already brought to market."
Hewlett-Packard Company
"Grand Champion technology was architected to meet enterprise-class reliability and performance," said Paul Miller, Director of Product Marketing, Mainstream Servers, HP Industry Standard Servers. "By incorporating the GC-SL into entry-level ProLiant server models, HP will provide enhanced value and robust server features across the broadest set of customer needs."
IBM Corp.
"ServerWorks has delivered a robust entry server solution for Pentium 4 deployments," said Jeff Benck, Director of Product Marketing of IBM's eServer xSeries line. "The latest GC-SL core logic technology coupled with our strength in systems management will enable us to continue to provide innovative solutions for small business customers that can help reduce their cost of doing business."
NEC Corporation
"We are pleased that our long-term relationship with ServerWorks has consistently yielded such advanced core logic designs," said Kazuhiko Maekawa, General Manager, Server and Client Division, NEC. "The new GC-SL is an excellent addition to the comprehensive Grand Champion SystemI/O product line- up that we need to make our servers and workstations among the best on the market."
Availability
The Grand Champion SL SystemI/O solution includes the CMIC-SL North Bridge, the CSB6 South Bridge, and the CIOB-X2 Dual-Channel PCI-X Controller. The GC-SL SystemI/O core logic is currently available in sample quantities, with volume deliveries scheduled for early summer.
