IRVINE, Calif. and SAN JOSE, Calif., Jun 24, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor solutions enabling broadband communications, today announced that Bell Microproducts is now shipping Broadcom® RAIDCore™ serial ATA (SATA) RAID controllers to authorized resellers. Broadcom announced a distribution agreement in March that allows Bell Microproducts to distribute Broadcom's family of RAIDCore serial ATA RAID controllers to resellers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America and Europe. Bell Microproducts is one of the largest storage-centric, value-added distributors in the world.
Available immediately through Bell Microproducts' resellers, Broadcom's RAID controllers are the fastest, most functional and highly reliable serial ATA host bus adapters (HBAs) in the market today. These low-profile compliant controllers deliver the highest performance possible utilizing 64-bit, 133 MHz PCI-X support that is enabled through Broadcom's new BCM5770 serial ATA controller chip. As a result, Broadcom's eight-channel controller performs RAID0 sequential reads at over 460 megabytes per second (MB/s) and sequential writes at more than 430 MB/s, as well as RAID5 sequential reads exceeding 400 MB/s and sequential writes at over 280 MB/s, all of which are performance leaders versus competitive products.
Utilizing XelCore™ RAID software based on Broadcom's proprietary Fulcrum™ architecture (a highly integrated storage architecture), Broadcom's RAID solutions are ideal for small-to-medium sized businesses (SMBs) or departments of larger enterprises, offering high-performance, enterprise-class RAID functionality. The XelCore software provides support for all popular RAID levels, online capacity expansion, controller spanning, online RAID level migration, and the ability to create storage arrays that span multiple controllers without having to bring the system down. As a result, Broadcom's RAID controllers lower the total cost of ownership, improve RAID performance, and enable customers to implement enterprise-class storage functionality at costs affordable to SMBs.
By completely integrating Broadcom technology from chip to code, the RAIDCore serial ATA RAID controllers achieve reliability measurements nearly three times those of typical SATA RAID controllers.
Bell Microproducts is accelerating its channel sales efforts to bring these data integrity and access performance solutions to resellers today.
"Bell Microproducts is one of the most respected providers of storage solutions and an ideal partner for distributing our serial ATA RAID controllers to the SMB market," said Tom Marmen, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Storage Line of Business. "With an all-Broadcom technology platform, we have added a host of enterprise-class RAID features, enhanced reliability and improved performance by leveraging the superior architecture that the BCM5770 SATA I/O chip affords."
"Our relationship with Broadcom's storage business has been characterized by product leadership, outstanding performance, enterprise-class RAID features and affordable pricing," said Jerry Kagele, Executive Vice President, Commercial Products Sales and Marketing of Bell Microproducts. "Our customers have recognized that Broadcom engineered a superb product set in the RAIDCore SATA RAID controllers, and we are already fulfilling rapidly escalating orders for this superb product."
The XelCore software stack and Fulcrum architecture acquired in January 2004 as part of its acquisition of RAIDCore, Inc., enable Broadcom to offer a unique and complete set of RAID solutions to the server storage market. Broadcom is one of few semiconductor providers that can offer enterprise-class storage and data integrity to all levels of businesses, including SMBs, who can now implement enterprise-level RAID features without the cost and IT-intensive processes that have kept RAID from more widespread use. In addition, the combination of Broadcom silicon, the Fulcrum architecture and XelCore software brings to market a set of enterprise-class RAID storage solutions to existing customers in the high volume server and storage markets.
Availability
Broadcom's RAIDCore serial ATA RAID controllers are available from Bell Microproducts resellers in North America, South America and Europe (www.bellmicro.com). Australian and New Zealand customers can order the controllers from Server-Bits.Com resellers (www.serverbits.com.au) located in Australia. The U.S. manufacturers' suggested list prices are $362 USD for the 8-channel controller and $289 USD for the 4-channel card.
