IRVINE, Calif., Feb 16, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in wired and wireless broadband communications semiconductors, today announced that palmOne, Inc.'s recently announced Treo™ 650 smartphone uses Broadcom's cellular EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) and Bluetooth® technologies. The Treo 650 combines a world-class compact, full-featured mobile phone with email, a Palm OS® organizer, messaging and web access(1) -- simplifying customers' lives by giving mobile professionals what they need to stay connected and in touch, all in one place.
The Treo 650 builds upon the award-winning features of the Treo 600, which was based upon Broadcom's cellular baseband processor technology. palmOne enhanced the performance of the Treo 650 by incorporating the Broadcom® BCM2132 single-chip EDGE/GPRS/GSM multimedia baseband processor and Blutonium® BCM2035 Bluetooth radio. The BCM2132 improves the Treo 650 user experience by enabling connections to the Internet at data rates up to four times faster than GSM (Global System for Mobile) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), when connected to an EDGE-based network.(2) The BCM2035 enables Treo 650 users to connect to Bluetooth wireless devices, such as a headset or desktop computer, allowing the user to talk on a headset and synchronize with desktop or notebook computers without wires getting in the way.
Broadcom's EDGE/GPRS/GSM and Bluetooth Solutions
The BCM2132 is a single-chip EDGE/GPRS/GSM multimedia baseband processor, enabling high-speed, multi-slot Class 10 maximum data rates of 236 Kbps over GSM-based networks. The chip supports a broad array of multimedia features including camera, graphics engine, multiple color displays, USB, IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth technologies. Broadcom's BCM2132 includes complete messaging client software that enables video clips or pictures to be sent via EDGE, as well as a broad range of messaging support.
The BCM2035 is a single-chip Bluetooth device that features the industry's best radio performance, with a specified sensitivity of -89 dBm. This performance ensures optimum connections among Bluetooth-enabled cell phones, headsets, PDAs and laptops, enabling greater range over which Bluetooth- enabled equipment can wirelessly share information. Broadcom has incorporated many advanced features into its WIDCOMM® Bluetooth software to complement the BCM2035's excellent radio capabilities, providing overall Bluetooth system performance that exceeds requirements for the most popular applications and provides the highest level of product interoperability in the industry.
