IRVINE, Calif. and SAN MATEO, Calif., Sept 28, 2005 -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in wired and wireless broadband communications networks and Mediabolic, a leading provider of end- to-end software solutions for connected entertainment products today announced that they have partnered to unveil a complete network attached storage (NAS) hardware and software platform with embedded media server capabilities.
The Broadcom NAS media server reference design will enable original design manufacturers (ODMs) and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to add NAS media servers to their product lines. Based on the Broadcom® BCM4780 network attached storage-on-a-chip (NASoC) silicon and Mediabolic's standards- compliant media server software, the new NAS media server reference design is a low-cost, easy-to-deploy solution that provides the ability to stream music, photo, and video files to a variety of connected entertainment devices throughout the home.
"Combining our NASoC products with Mediabolic's proven software will enable OEMs to quickly produce powerful media server storage products," said David Murray, Director of Business Development for Broadcom's NASoC products. "We have a large number of customers either shipping or developing NAS products on our silicon, and each one of them can easily add Mediabolic's media server functionality without having to make additional changes to the hardware, giving them the ability to dramatically accelerate their time-to- market."
The new Broadcom NAS media server reference design, which may be used in conjunction with Mediabolic software includes all the hardware and software components OEMs and ODMs need to offer a new category of NAS device -- one that serves digital content over home networks. The NASoC chip integrates multiple high-end storage capabilities and enables products that are based on the chip to feature simple installation and storage expansion at very cost- effective price points.
Mediabolic's Media Server software is available in two forms: a turnkey object license for manufacturers seeking a ready-to-go solution, and a Source Code SDK license, which provides complete design flexibility and customization. Either way, the software is highly efficient, requiring minimal CPU and memory resources, and is highly interoperable. Mediabolic's Media Server software is Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)-compliant and is designed to Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) guidelines.
"Broadcom delivers a best-of-breed system-on-a-chip solution -- its silicon is well integrated, comes with software, and can be easily deployed at a minimal cost to manufacturers," said Daniel Putterman, President and CEO of Mediabolic. "It was a clear choice for Mediabolic to leverage the most popular, most competitive chip available today to create a turnkey NAS media server that lets users share files, stream their digital content to other connected entertainment products, and gain 'always-on' access to their personal media, even when their PCs are turned off. We're pleased to be partnering with Broadcom to build one of the finest DLNA-compatible NAS products on the market."
Availability
The new reference design from Broadcom featuring Mediabolic software will be available in October 2005.
