Platform Runs on VideoCore® Applications Processor and Integrates Bluetooth®, Wi-Fi®, Power Management and FM Tuner Technologies for Portable Multimedia Device Development
BARCELONA, Spain, 3GSM World Congress, Feb 13, 2007 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced the availability of a new development platform for portable multimedia devices. The platform integrates all the hardware and software components required to build advanced multimedia devices into a single, modular design. The new reference design combines Broadcom's proven Bluetooth®, Wi-Fi®, power management and FM tuner technologies, with a high performance Broadcom® VideoCore® applications processor, to provide a platform capable of playing the most demanding multimedia content. A complete board support package is included to ease software development and speed time-to-market. The new development platform will be demonstrated this week at 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
With the increasing popularity of portable music players, system developers must add communications and other features to differentiate their products from the competition, while still accommodating consumer demand. These new capabilities significantly increase the complexity of the system and create many new development and interoperability challenges that often force manufacturers to make compromises in their selection of individual components. Broadcom's new development platform reduces design complexity by integrating a set of proven and interoperable industry leading components, designed to work together, and driven by a powerful VideoCore applications processor.
"This new development platform makes it easy to produce compelling products based on applications processors, enabling tremendous multimedia capabilities and advanced wireless connectivity," said Robert Swann, Director of Marketing for Broadcom's Mobile Multimedia line of business. "Since we provide a formidable range of industry-leading wireless communications solutions, this platform provides our customers with the focus needed in providing a no-compromise multimedia experience using the innovative low power VideoCore architecture."
Announced today is the Broadcom BCM92820DK development platform that integrates all of the hardware and software components required for advanced multimedia devices and incorporates the Broadcom BCM2820 VideoCore applications processor, the Broadcom BCM4328 Wi-Fi transceiver, the Broadcom BCM2048 Bluetooth + FM transceiver and the Broadcom BCM59001 power management unit (PMU). The BCM92820DK development platform also features a high-resolution (VGA) Sharp LCD, a TV demodulator, as well as a wide range of expansion and debug facilities.
Technical Information
The BCM92820DK development platform is based on the BCM2820 VideoCore applications processor that combines an ARM1136JF™ processor with a Broadcom VideoCore multimedia processor (currently shipping in high volume in popular portable media players worldwide). It also features a highly integrated set of peripherals to enable rich multimedia applications within an industry-standard Linux® environment, while continuing to deliver the low power consumption required for today's handheld devices. Applications supported by the BCM2820 include VGA video encode and decode, high quality audio encode and decode, 8 Megapixel digital photography and television output.
The platform also includes industry-leading Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies from Broadcom, both provided as optional plug-in modules to enable customer design flexibility. The BCM2048 Bluetooth + FM solution is based on one of the most widely used products in the industry that has shipped in hundreds of millions of existing mobile phones. It supports all Bluetooth 2.0 features, including enhanced data rate (EDR) technology, and also supports the forthcoming Bluetooth 2.1 standard. The FM tuner provides high receiver sensitivity, superior transceiver tuning and station search functions, and supports both Radio Data Service (RDS) and Radio Broadcast Data Service (RBDS) processing. The BCM4328 is an ultra low power 802.11a/b/g single-chip transceiver that provides Broadcom's industry-leading Wi-Fi connectivity and features impressive power consumption performance.
To round out the platform capabilities, the BCM92820DK also includes the BCM59001 power management unit. This highly integrated PMU addresses the complex power management features needed in mobile systems and supports dynamic voltage management with two programmable, high-efficiency step-down regulators. It also includes eleven high performance programmable low drop-out regulators, an integrated real-time clock and comprehensive battery management support.
