BCM56501

4-Port 10-GbE/HiGig+™ Multilayer Switch

The BCM56501 is one of 5 chips within Broadcom's 500 Series of next-generation StrataXGS® III switch solutions. Based on four prior generations of highly-integrated and cost-effective StrataSwitch® and StrataXGS switch architectures, the BCM56501 is a single-chip solution supporting four 10GbE/HiGig™ uplink ports and incorporates ubiquitous network security, wire-speed IPv6 routing and wireless LAN support.

The BCM56501 uplink ports can operate in two modes: 10GbE switching mode and HiGig+ uplink mode. The integrated 10GbE switching ports are CX-4 compliant XAUI interfaces while the HiGig+ uplink interface is used to connect to other StrataXGS devices in a larger stacking system.

The BCM56501 is ideal for standalone, stackable and chassis switch configurations supporting enterprise, service provider and grid computing markets. In addition, these devices are well-suited for use in embedded applications such as blade servers, IP DSLAM (Internet protocol digital subscriber line access multiplexers), PON (passive optical networking), and AdvancedTCA® (Advanced telecom computing architecture), providing reliable local, backplane and inter-shelf switching.

  • Four 10GbE ports supporting both copper and fiber connections
  • Ubiquitous security including Denial of Service attack blocking, embedded cryptography and L2-L7 application-aware secure policies
  • Seamless integration for a unified wireless and wired infrastructure eliminating the need for costly appliances and separate WLAN management
  • Highly scalable BroadScale™ processor evolved from five generations of switching experience provides rich features, scalability, and future-proof solutions
  • IPv6 routing with IPv6 to IPv4 tunneling to enable the easy migration of IPv6 in corporate and service provider networks
  • API compatibility with previous generations of Broadcom switches
