Dual-Port 10GBASE-T Transceiver
The BCM84836 provides a dual-port 100/1000/10GBASE-T transceiver in a small 21x21mm package. This smaller package greatly reduces the printed circuit board (PCB) real estate vs. the 25x25mm alternative by optimizing the pinout and by providing only a XFI interface, without consuming pins that would be required if the device offered a XAUI interface. Broadcom's 10GBASE-T PHYs offer operation over 100m using CAT6a or CAT7 twisted pair cables. The BCM84836 features an additional line-side XFI interface, which permits dual-media systems to be implemented with an SFP+ cage adjacent to the RJ45.
The BCM84836 is optimized to enable switch, controller and other general 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) connectivity applications. Each port in the BCM84836 contains two XFI interfaces. The XFI interfaces also support SGMII, which supports lower speed 100/1000BASE-T operation. This dual-port PHY enables customers to implement NIC controllers as well as dual-media uplinks and line cards. The BCM84836S is a single-port version of the device.
